Introducing the McIntyre "Cat" Shear
The recovery of precious metals from catalytic converters is the latest application for a McIntyre shear. J.McIntyre Machinery Ltd has produced a “Cat” shear modelled around its traditional 16” blade 407 shear. The Cat shear is used to first cut the converter in half, following which the edges, which become pinched together in the cutting process, are re-opened on a specially designed bracket. The precious metal contents can then be simply tipped out and sold on for refining. As an option, the machine can be equipped with a dust extraction unit to remove and contain dust from the converters, which will also contain valuable metals.
McIntyre have already sold a number of Cat shears to Germany and Eastern Europe following numerous enquiries for a simple device able to process converters. Export Sales Director Phillip Pownall said: “Because our original markets for shears and balers have declined over the last few years, we have had to look for new outlets for our products – as well as to design new ones. So far, we have done quite well with a shear adapted specifically for weapons destruction, and we are hoping that the Cat converter shear will be equally successful.”
